Israel lifts majority of coronavirus restrictions as new cases drop to single digits, but keeps indoor mask mandate

Having lived through three nationwide Covid-19 lockdowns, Israel has lifted nearly all of the restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the disease, but fell short of scrapping the mask mandate for now.

The bulk of the coronavirus restrictions that have plagued the Israeli economy for over a year will no longer be in effect starting June 1. Restaurants, stores, and other establishments will no longer be required to adhere to a capacity limit. The cap on outdoor and indoor gatherings will also be lifted.

The heavily criticized system of ‘vaccine passports’ that allowed holders of ‘green passes’, who either were vaccinated or survived Covid-19, to access certain cultural and sporting events, will be removed as well.

Hamas vows not to touch a ‘single cent’ of international aid intended for rebuilding Gaza

The only remaining restriction is the indoor mask mandate, which is expected to remain in place for at least the next week.

The loosening of restrictions comes after the number of new infections dropped significantly, plummeting to only four new cases on Sunday. The number of active infections has also decreased dramatically to around 350, while more than half of the population has been vaccinated.

While Israel is relaxing the rules for residents, it does not plan to lift the curbs on air travel. International arrivals will still be required to produce negative coronavirus tests, taken before and after landing. In addition to that, travelers have to go into isolation for at least 10 days after arrival. The only way to avoid quarantine is to have a valid vaccination or recovery certification issued by the Israeli Ministry of Health, provided the travelers are not arriving from high-risk countries.

While there were fears that the recent Israeli-Hamas conflict could hinder efforts to stem the pandemic in the enclave, Palestine appears to have fared well – but it’s still a far cry from the Israeli numbers. According to Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila, nearly 98% of all Palestinian cases have resulted in recovery, and only about 1.2% remain active. In Gaza, which was severely damaged by the Israeli airstrikes during the 11-day war, 246 new cases were recorded, while in the West Bank, 56 new infections were reported as of Monday.

‘Boldface fabrication’: General Michael Flynn denies he endorsed Myanmar-style coup in America in viral video

Former Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has rubbished reports that he had backed an idea of a military-style coup in the US, accusing the media of “twisted reporting” of his remark that was caught on video.

“Let me be VERY CLEAR – There is NO reason whatsoever for any coup in America, and I do not and have not at any time called for any action of that sort,” Flynn posted on what is purportedly his Telegram channel on Monday.

Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn says coup similar to one in Myanmar ‘should happen’ in US

The retired US Army Lieutenant, known for his unwavering support of former President Donald Trump, appeared to suggest that the remark he made at a recent conference in Dallas, Texas, was intentionally misconstrued by the media, as it rushed to seize on the clip.

In the short video, filmed over the weekend and which began making rounds on Monday, Flynn was asked by a supporter “why what happened in Myanmar can’t happen here.”

"No reason, I mean,” Flynn responded, before adding: “It should happen here.”

“No reason, that’s right,” he said further. As Flynn was responding to the question, he was constantly interrupted by loud cheers from the crowd.

While the footage provoked angry backlash from the general’s liberal critics, accusing him of seemingly endorsing a military coup, Flynn argued on Telegram that he, on the contrary, outright rejected such a scenario.

The former national security advisor claimed that he in fact said: “There is no reason it (a coup) should happen here (in America),” when responding to the question.

Flynn fired back at the media for what he called “a boldface fabrication” of his words “based on twisting reporting at a lively panel at a conference of Patriotic Americans who love this country.”

Flynn’s critics, however, were not convinced by the general’s attempt to set the record straight, suggesting he was “attempting to gaslight his way out of this” and that he was backtracking from his endorsement of a military operation.

Flynn has taken to Parler to share a similar message in his defence, while his former attorney Sidney Powell blasted the reports as “fake news taken out of context and grossly magnified to the point of distortion.”

Both Flynn and Powell have been banned from Twitter as part of a post-January 6 riot crackdown, targeting proponents of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Judge dismisses case against Michael Flynn, acknowledging Trump pardon made it irrelevant

A coup in Myanmar in February led to the ouster of the country’s de-facto civil leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The military rule sparked mass protests that have triggered heavy-handed police response. More than 800 people were killed during the crackdown, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, while the official death toll stands at some 300 slain protesters and 50 police.

Flynn served as national security advisor to Trump before he was accused and later charged of lying to the FBI over his contacts with Russian officials. While initially Flynn struck a guilty plea with the prosecution, he later recanted the deal, claiming he had been entrapped by the FBI. Flynn was eventually pardoned by Trump in November last year.

Canadian health officials apologize after children recieve unapproved Covid-19 vaccine by MISTAKE

A health authority in Canada’s British Columbia has apologized after admitting that a dozen children were given the Moderna jab, still to be greenlighted for use in those under 18, as the child vaccination rollout kicked off.

Vancouver Coastal Health, regional health authority that serves one in four residents of Canada’s British Columbia, has confirmed that 12 children were given a wrong innoculation on Friday and Saturday last week just as the teenagers in the province became eligible for the vaccine.

Currently, only the Pfizer-BioNTech has been cleared for use in children aged 12 to 17 in Canada. However, officials said that they do not expect the young patients to develop any adverse effects from the immunization, noting that Moderna claimed recently, citing preliminary data, that their vaccine protects children the same way it protects adults, while triggering similar side-effects.

Canadian soldier charged with ‘mutiny’ after calling on troops not to distribute ‘killer’ Covid-19 vaccine

Children from 12 to 17 or some 310,000 people became part of British Columbia's vaccine rollout on May 20. Although young children are considered to be at a lower risk of developing Covid-19 complications and are less likely to spread the disease compared to adults, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said at the time that by vaccinating children the government seeks to reduce “the overall transmission of Covid in the population.”

According to data by Health Canada, Canadians under 19 account for some 18.9 percent of the total Covid-19 cases, trailing only behind the 20-29 age group. However, only 1.8 percent or 1,245 teenagers were hospitalized, including 11 who died from the disease - the smallest percentage of all age groups.

As of last week, a little more than half of Canada’s total population has received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Fewer than five percent have been fully vaccinated, however.

Meanwhile, as Canada is seeking to ramp up its vaccination drive, last week the country’s health authority approved the use of some 45,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses past their original expiry date on Monday. Canada’s Ministry of Health argued that the doses can be used until July 1, citing assurances from AstraZeneca that the immunization would be still safe and efficient past May 31.

Wikipedia may be branded 'foreign agent' if Russia adopts law imposing new rules on tech giants, says foundation’s representative

If Moscow legislators pass a proposed law to force large IT companies to maintain offices on Russian soil, Wikipedia could be registered as a foreign agent, and as such it may have to deal with numerous sanctions and restrictions.

That's according to Stanislav Kozlovsky, the executive director of Wikimedia RU, the Russian arm of the online encyclopaedia’s parent foundation. Speaking last Friday at a meeting of the country's parliamentary committee on technology and communications, he asked politicians not to pass the proposed legislation.

“If official representation of a nonprofit organization is established in Russia, it automatically becomes a foreign agent. It is subject to all the sanctions against foreign agents,” Kozlovsky explained, telling the MPs that Wikipedia is not run for profit and is financed by donations from users.

In Russia, any NGO receiving foreign agent designation faces multiple restrictions, including a prohibition on employing foreigners, and regular audits.

Foreign tech giants to be forced to open offices in Russia as officials look to stop companies ignoring demands from regulators

The proposed law to force tech giants to create a base in Russia was put forward by MP Alexander Khinstein of the ruling United Russia party. If passed, it would regulate the activities of foreign companies whose websites are visited by more than 500,000 Russians a day. The legislation is designed to make these businesses accountable to the country's laws. As things stand, foreign tech giants often avoid demands from the Russian authorities.

According to Khinstein, Wikipedia would not be designated as a foreign agent, as it is not engaged in political activities. However, Kozlovsky believes that current legislation would, in fact, apply to the website.

“I am talking to you now, and according to your law, that is political activity,” Kozlovsky said.

Another one of the bill's authors, United Russia MP Anton Gorelkin, said that he also does not think Wikipedia would fall under the regulation of the legislation on foreign agents.

“Wikipedia is essentially a social network,” he wrote on his Telegram channel on Friday. “If we consider Wikipedia to be a political entity, as Kozlovsky suggested, then we would have to extend this attitude to all social networks in general. This makes no sense and is unrealistic.”

1st case of AstraZeneca vaccine blood clotting recorded in South Korea as man hospitalized

South Korea has recorded its first case of blood clotting linked to the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, with one man being hospitalized.

Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) Commissioner Jeong Eun-kyeong revealed on Monday that an unnamed man in his 30s had to be hospitalized for a persistent headache and muscle cramps after he was vaccinated on April 27.

“His condition has improved since then and we understand there is no big problem though he still needs monitoring,” Jeong added.

German scientists claim to have solved Covid-19 vaccine blood clot mystery, say jabs can be altered

South Korea currently uses AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Moderna vaccines in its vaccination program. Over 4,600,000 doses of these vaccines have been administered in the country.

Two weeks ago, South Korea announced that it would trial the mixing of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines in an effort to speed up vaccination.

AstraZeneca’s vaccine, also known as Vaxzevria, has been linked to a number of cases of potentially fatal blood clotting in all around the world, with deaths recorded in Canada, the UK, Norway, Slovakia, and beyond.

As a result, the vaccine has been suspended in several countries and restricted to those in older age brackets – whose benefit from the jab is deemed to outweigh the risk – in other countries.

On top of links to deadly blood clotting, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has also been investigating reports of AstraZeneca’s vaccine causing Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Since the start of the pandemic, South Korea has recorded nearly 140,000 cases of Covid-19 and 1,957 deaths.

Dems stage surprise walk-out at Texas State House to block vote on voting rules bill, governor calls for special session

Texas Republican legislators’ attempt to rush through a controversial voting bill before the end of the legislative session was stopped in its tracks by a surprise Democrat walk-out, denying a quorum.

Senate Bill 7 (SB7) would enact a major overhaul of the electoral process in Texas. Written along lines not unlike those of similar bills passed in Georgia and Florida, it became a focal point for partisan clashes on the state and federal levels. Republicans said the reform was meant to protect the integrity of elections from fraud, while Democrats said it was meant to suppress the vote of black Texans, with some branding it the “new Jim Crow,” in reference to the system of legal discrimination of black people that was in force in many states before the mid-1960s.

‘Moving in the wrong direction’: White House slams new Florida voting law as ‘built on a lie’

With the GOP controlling both chambers of the state legislature, the Texas bill was expected to be finalized on the weekend and passed on to the desk of Governor Greg Abbott. However, a last-minute maneuver by House Democrats blocked a vote on Sunday, the last day of the legislative session.

The Democrats’ initial plan was to stall until the midnight deadline with speeches against the bill, but “it became obvious Republicans were going to cut off debate to ram through their vote suppression legislation,” House Democratic chairman Chris Turner said in a statement later. “At that point, we had no choice but to take extraordinary measures to protect our constituents and their right to vote.”

Republicans have only themselves to blame for the way this Session is ending.

As the debate continued, he instructed members of the Democratic caucus to discreetly leave the chamber and the building. With dozens of lawmakers trickling out, the 150-seat body didn’t have the quorum. Two-thirds of the House members have to be present to take a vote. Republican Speaker Dade Phelan adjourned the session and later lashed out at the Democrats, accusing them of dereliction of duty.

The runaway lawmakers “killed a number of strong, consequential bills with broad bipartisan support,” Phelan said in a statement. “Texans shouldn’t have to pay for the consequences of these members’ actions – or in this case inaction.”

The governor likewise rebuked the Democrats and said the bill will be back on the floor in a special session. “Election Integrity & Bail Reform were emergency items for this legislative session. They STILL must pass,” he tweeted. A brief statement along the same lines did not set a date for when the special session will be held.

The clash over SB7 escalated on the weekend after a slew of last-minute changes were proposed by a conference committee following a behind-closed-doors discussion over the past week. The changes introduced additional rules that were not part of the previous versions of the bill, which were passed by both the House and the Senate.

These older versions differed significantly from each other. On Sunday, both chambers were supposed to pass a unified text that would then be signed by Governor Abbott. A marathon debate in the Senate, where Democrats objected to the changes and the fact that they were not given enough time to review them properly, ended with a victory for the GOP, after SB7 was approved overnight.

‘The questions will never end’: Nurmagomedov talks comeback, weight after shunning $100MN Mayweather bout in Saudi Arabia (VIDEO)

UFC legend and retired lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has spoken about his highest ever weight, his plans to shun going into coaching full time and the mouthwatering fee he was offered to face Floyd Mayweather.

Sharp analyst Nurmagomedov was a keen viewer as his Eagle Fighting Championship held an event in Kazan, where he hopes to open his own gym and hold future events.

Nurmagomedov watched Vladimir Daineko knock out Leonid Timoshenko in a heavyweight clash as one of eight main fights on the bill, also visiting sports facilities in Almetyevsk, where he spoke to young athletes.

Almost inevitably, the sporting icon fielded familiar queries about whether he might return to extend his unbeaten 29-fight MMA career, having retired after beating Justin Gaethje in October.

"Those questions will never end," accepted the Dagestani, who has always maintained that he has no plans to step back in the octagon despite the overtures of the likes of UFC president Dana White.

"I think I’ll be asked, 10 years from now, 'Oh, there are fighters that fought at 42 in the UFC. Will you return?'

"But I wouldn’t wait for my comeback. You’ll be waiting a long time. Why do I need to come [back] out? I’m not interested in self-affirmation or money."

Still only 32, Nurmagomedov is pursuing a number of business ventures, and batted off more hopeful enquiries by emphasizing that he is not "interested at all" in a grappling match.

"Why do I need to grapple someone?," he asked. "I’m tired of, as they say, diving for sweaty legs.

"We grapple in training. But to fight in an arena to prove…I don’t even know what to prove."

Despite being in the corner of many of his friends and relatives, four of whom will fight in July alone, Khabib doesn't intend to dedicate himself to coaching.

"I don’t think it’d be right for me to be just a coach," he said. "I can do so much more, so I don’t plan on doing that.

"When my brothers fight, I’m happy to advise them. Since I have a lot of experience in the octagon, I can give good advice – especially when it’s guys that you grew up with and know well.

"You know their strengths and weaknesses, how they match up against their opponent. I’ll be doing that in the future."

Pushed on his walk around weight at the moment, Khabib asked: "You mean to do a grappling self affirmation match to attract attention to Eagle FC?

"I can do [that], but I’m not interested. I think I can just invite a good grappler instead."

Asked again, he fired back "What's your weight? Do you know that you never ask a wrestler’s or a woman’s weight and age?

"You don’t even ask a wrestler’s age and never ask about weight. I know wrestlers... they stand like this and hide their weight. So it’s not polite to ask about weight."

Nurmagomedov knocked back suggestions he was at his record weight since retiring. "No, I’ve weighed more," he retorted, adding that he had been at his heaviest in 2017, when he had back surgery shortly before fighting.

"I weighed 203lb. Then on December 29th [at the weigh in for UFC 219 the next day, where he won against Edson Barboza], I weighed 155.

"I weighed my most because when I had surgery I couldn’t run or lift weights for five or six months. Now I weigh a lot less."

One of the huge offers he has been made is against another fighter who is routinely in athletic shape.

A bout with boxer Floyd Mayweather – one of the other rare fighters to have gone out as a champion with a perfect record – could have followed the increasingly well-worn path to Saudi Arabia, where the heavyweight boxing match between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua had also been expected to take place before contractual complications scuppered proceedings.

"The enticement is always there," said Nurmagomedov of the proposal to meet Mayweather.

"There were such discussions with Saudi Arabia. They wanted me to fight there.

"I don’t know about $100 million. That wasn’t the exact sum, but around that. When it comes to fights like that, what’s $100 million?"

Going with the flow: Russia doesn’t plan to shut off gas to Ukraine after Nord Stream 2 pipeline complete, top diplomat insists

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has been billed as a vital part of European energy security. But, to its detractors, it could be a shady Russian scheme to cut Ukraine off from energy. Now, Moscow is seeking to dispel those fears.

Speaking to RIA Novosti in an interview published on Monday, Dmitry Birichevsky, the director of economic co-operation at the country’s Foreign Ministry, said that fears Russia could turn off the tap on supplies to its neighbor were unfounded. “We have no plan to suspend gas supplies through Ukraine,” he said, insisting that “Russia has never used energy or natural resources as a tool of pressure or blackmail.”

In April, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, Aleksey Reznikov, wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the pipeline was an existential threat to his country’s security and economy. He claimed that Moscow has previously “tried to bully Ukraine” by threatening a shut-off of energy supplies.

READ MORE: Biden says Nord Stream 2 sanctions waived because pipeline nearly done & fighting it now would be ‘counterproductive’ with allies

That argument found support among officials in former President Donald Trump’s White House, with top Washington politicians saying the project amounts to a “grave threat” to Europe’s “energy security, and American national security.”

Ukraine will be ‘irreparably weakened’ if Russia & Germany allowed to complete Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, warns Kiev's deputy PM

However, last week, current President Joe Biden said that Trump-era sanctions imposed on companies involved in the laying of the pipeline would be dropped. “I had been opposed to Nord Stream 2 from the beginning, but it was almost completed by the time I took office,” the Democratic Party politician told reporters in Washington last Tuesday. “To go ahead and impose sanctions now, I think is counterproductive in terms of our European relations.” Construction could now be completed as early as September.

Nord Stream 2 will bypass Kiev’s borders, linking Siberia’s gas fields to consumers in Western Europe via a conduit under the Baltic Sea, which will make ground in Germany. While Birichevsky insists it will not be used to cut Ukraine off from supplies altogether, it is likely to lead to a substantial decrease in revenue for Kiev in the longer term, given that Moscow pays substantial sums for the right to move gas through the country.

Bombshell report reveals how Ukrainian lobbyists pitted US against EU over new Russia-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline

In 2019, Russian state energy firm Gazprom penned a deal to keep the fuel flowing for another five years, handing over an estimated $7 billion as part of the agreement. The network was built on Moscow’s orders during the Soviet era, prior to the breakup of the USSR. While Ukrainian politicians have warned that the country “stands to lose billions of dollars in transit revenue,” Birichevsky said that no short-term changes were expected. He added that the deal, which expires in 2024, is still valid, and that, after it expires, “there will be negotiations between Gazprom and their partners in Ukraine.”

An explosive report published late last year found that lobbyists for Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz, as well as at least one representative of the country’s security council, actively launched a lobbying campaign in Washington aimed at securing US sanctions against its construction. Naftogaz’s Vadim Glamazdin is said to have claimed that new measures being mulled by American politicians would be “the final nail in the coffin” for the project. “When these sanctions are finally voted and become law, there will be no practical way to build this pipeline,” he is said to have added.

Gold on track for best month since last summer amid weaker dollar & inflation woes

The price of gold continued to rise on Monday, headed for its best monthly performance since July. Inflationary pressure, a weaker US dollar, and lower bond yields have driven demand for the safe-haven metal as a hedge.

Spot gold was up 0.4% at $1,909.81 per ounce, while US gold futures gained 0.4% to $1,913. Gold prices settled above $1,900 an ounce last week, breaching the important resistance level for the first time in around five months. Bullion has risen almost 8% this month.

“Gold is pretty much drawing its strength from inflation fears and some inclination of the yields,” Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management, told Reuters. “The dollar is staying weaker... Gold bulls now have their eyes set on US$2,000 and most of the guys are thinking it's going to go quite higher,” he added.

‘The world is going back to a GOLD STANDARD as the US dollar is about to collapse’ – Peter Schiff

Gold, which is often used as a hedge against inflation, has benefited from a recent rise in prices in the United States and Britain. US Federal Reserve officials said last week they would not be surprised if supply shortages push prices up in the coming months as the world recovers from the pandemic and pent-up demand is unleashed.

“On the technical front, a trade above the US$1,915.60 would, however, signal a resumption on the US$1,950 target... and there is strong support at the US$1,875 and US$1,850 levels,” said Phillip Futures senior commodities manager Avtar Sandu.

The prices of other metals are also on the rise, with palladium climbing 0.5% to $2,839.72 per ounce and platinum jumping 0.9% to $1,187.50. Silver rose 0.7% to $28.07 and is heading for its best monthly gain since December.

Zinedine Zidane takes dig at president Perez over Real Madrid exit with open letter to Los Blancos fans

In his first correspondence since leaving his post last week, ex-Real Madrid coach and club legend Zinedine Zidane has appeared to question president Florentino Perez via an open letter published by a leading Spanish newspaper.

Stepping down on Wednesday night before his decision was made official the following day, the Frenchman ended a second spell at the Bernabeu helm which was not as successful as the first.

Between 2016 and 2018, Zidane won a record three consecutive Champions League titles in addition to the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup twice, plus La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup once each.

In his sophamore reign from 2019 onwards, though, only the Liga and Super Cup were forthcoming as Los Blancos failed twice on the continent.

This season, they finished trophyless for the first campaign in more than a decade, and Zidane decided to leave before being fired as speculation he would be axed dominated press conferences and the two main sports newspapers in the Spanish capital.

One of them, As, has published an open letter from the 1998 Ballon d'Or winner to the Madrid faithful.

And Zidane didn't hold back on expressing his unhappiness with the way things were handled during his time in the dugout.

"Dear Real Madrid supporters," he began. "For more than 20 years, from the first day I arrived in Madrid and wore the white shirt, you’ve shown me your love. I’ve always felt that there was something special between us.

"I’ve had the enormous honor of being a player and the coach of the greatest club ever, but above all I’m just another Madrid fan. For all these reasons I wanted to write this letter, to say goodbye to you and explain my decision to leave the coaching job."

Insisting that he returned in 2019 because Perez and supporters asked him to, he expressed gratitude to both parties and described being at Madrid for two decades as "the most beautiful thing that's happened to me in my life" which he owes "entirely" to Perez for smashing the world transfer record in 2001 when signing him from Juventus.

Stressing he will always be grateful to the European Super League supremo for fighting to bring him to La Liga, Zidane explained that he is going but "not jumping overboard" –and is not "tired of coaching" either.

"In May 2018, I left because, after two-and-a-half years, with so many victories and so many trophies, I felt the team needed a new approach to stay at the very highest level," he said.

"Right now, things are different. I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term.

"I understand football and I know the demands of a club like Real Madrid. I know when you don’t win, you have to leave.

"But with this, a very important thing has been forgotten. Everything I built day-to-day has been forgotten, what I brought to my relationships with the players, with the 150 people who work with and around the team.

"I’m a natural-born winner and I was here to win trophies, but even more important than this are the people, their feelings, life itself – and I have the sensation these things have not been taken into account, that there has been a failure to understand that these things also keep the dynamics of a great club going. To some extent, I have even been rebuked for it.

"I want there to be respect for what we have achieved together. I would have liked my relationship with the club and the president over the past few months to have been a little different to that of other coaches. I wasn’t asking for privileges – of course not – just a little more recollection."

Highlighting that the average shelf life at a big club these days is two years, Zidane admitted to being hurt by constant rumors he would be fired after a defeat, and took a dig over "deliberately leaked messages to the media" which "negatively influenced the squad" and "created doubts and misunderstandings"

"Luckily, I had these amazing lads who were with me to the death. When things turned ugly, they saved me with magnificent victories, because they believed in me and knew I believed in them.

"Of course, I’m not the best coach in the world, but I’m able to give everyone – whether it’s a player, a member of the coaching staff or any employee – the strength and confidence they need in their job," Zidane claimed.

"I know perfectly well what a team needs. Over these 20 years at Madrid I’ve learnt that you, the fans, want to win, of course, but above all you want us to give our all: the coach, the staff, the employees and of course the players.

"And I can assure you we’ve given 100% of ourselves to this club."

Zidane signed off with a message to vowing to remain a fan, adding that he regretted speaking to supporters largely about controversies and "very little [about] football".

Naturally, the letter has sent shockwaves around Spain and the rest of the football world.

But while it is being dissected and onlookers wonder how and when Perez might respond, star striker Karim Benzema has lamented his roe model's departure.

"He's a very great coach. On a human level, he's the perfect man," Benzema said, while on international duty for France after a shock recall from Zidane's former Bleus teammate, Didier Deschamps.

"With me, he's magnificent. I'm disappointed that he is leaving Real, but that's how it is. Life goes on."

France says allegations of US espionage on European leaders are ‘extremely serious’ & may have ‘consequences’

Reports that the US National Intelligence Agency, aided by Denmark, spied on top European politicians including Angela Merkel are “extremely serious” if true, the French secretary of state for European affairs has said.

“It is extremely serious, we must verify if our EU partners, Danes, have committed errors or mistakes in their cooperation with the American services… And then on the American side, see if indeed there was listening, spying on politicians,” Clement Beaune said in an interview with the France Info radio network.

The statement comes a day after European media reported that the US National Intelligence Agency allegedly spied on European politicians, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (who previously served as minister of foreign affairs), with the help of Denmark, from 2012 to 2014. According to Danish public broadcaster Danmarks Radio, the US National Security Agency (NSA) tapped into Danish telecommunications cables to spy on officials in Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France. The Danish military intelligence services are said to have helped the US.

Denmark helped NSA spy on Merkel & other European leaders, new reports reveal, as Snowden says Biden was ‘deeply involved’

The French secretary of state for European affairs said the situation could have “consequences in terms of cooperation” with the United States.

We are not in a world of Care Bears, so this kind of behavior, unfortunately, can happen, and we will verify it. Between allies, there must be trust, a minimum cooperation, so these potential facts are serious.

Beaune added he did not know the identity of the French officials who were allegedly spied on.

Danish Defense Minister Trine Bramsen declined to comment on what she called “speculation” about intelligence matters in the media, according to Reuters. The Danish Defense Intelligence Service, as well as the US' Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the NSA, declined to comment on the media report to the news agency.

‘A sad day for sport’: Tributes paid after 19yo assistant referee dies while warming up for football match in Spain

The mayor of a town in south-east Spain has led tributes and a cup final involving Barcelona has held a minute's silence after a 19-year-old assistant referee died when warming up before a football match.

Fernando Alcaraz Bernal passed away during preparations for a game in Murcia between San Gines de la Jara and visitors Montecasillas on Sunday.

The tragic incident struck just 15 minutes before the scheduled afternoon kick off at the Sanchez Luengo stadium, when Bernal passed out, started to suffer convulsions and entered cardiorespiratory arrest.

The local football federation took to Twitter to offer its sympathies and sent "a big hug to those closest to him right now."

The home side offered their deepest condolences to Bernal's family after the match was postponed.

"It is very difficult to express what we have experienced this afternoon in the warm-up of our game against Montecasillas," they said, refering to the small town he hailed from near Cartagena.

"We are dismayed by the death of referee Fernando Alcaraz Bernal, a very young boy and a neighbor of La Union."

The Mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belen Castejon, also took to social media to express her sadness. "Today is a sad day for sport in which it is difficult to express our dismay," she wrote.

"My condolences to the family and friends of the referee who passed away today. All of us accompany you in your grief."

A minute's silence was held to honor Bernal before the Copa de la Reina final between Barcelona Femini and Levante, which was won 4-2 by the Champions League holders to complete their treble.

The match officials also wore black armbands.

Russian woman arrested in Minsk after grounding of Ryanair flight could be deported home after trial, says Belarus’ chief diplomat

Sofia Sapega, the Russian woman arrested in Minsk when her flight was forced to land last week, will likely be tried in Belarus but may be pardoned or deported afterwards, according to the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs.

On May 23, a Ryanair jet carrying 126 passengers from Greece was forced to make an emergency stop in Minsk because of a supposed bomb threat. Once it landed, police came onto the aircraft and arrested Sapega, alongside her boyfriend Roman Protasevich, a Belarusian activist who has worked for US state-run media and once ran opposition Telegram channel Nexta. It has also been alleged that Protasevich fought in the neo-Nazi Azov battalion during the 2014 Ukrainian War. Taking part in the conflict, on either side, is a criminal offence in Belarus.

Later, when no bomb was found, the plane left for its final destination in Lithuania. Western governments have slammed the actions of the authorities in Minsk, with some calling the incident “piracy” or a “hijacking.”

Putin says reaction to grounding of Ryanair flight is just ‘surge of emotions’ in talks with Belarus’ embattled leader Lukashenko

Sapega was born in Russia and holds Russian citizenship, but she moved to Belarus at the age of six, according to her father. There have been calls for her to be sent back to her country of birth, which forms a Union State with Belarus, per a 1999 treaty.

“I can't predict how the situation will develop further, because there are different options. It will be up to the head of state to decide to pardon her or transfer her to Russia to continue serving her sentence. We will have to wait,” Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told Moscow daily Kommersant on Monday, also noting that Sapega has a residence permit for Belarus, where her mother lives.

According to the authorities in Minsk, Sapega is suspected of involvement in the organization of mass riots in Belarus, and is alleged to have been behind the Telegram channel ‘Black Book’, which exposed private details about members of Belarus' security services. A few days after her arrest, state-run TV broadcast a video of Sapega admitting to editing the channel.

“All over the world, there is a rule that disclosure of personal data is strictly prohibited. It is a crime and is severely punished,” Makei said.

Last week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia would do the “utmost to protect the rights” of its citizen.

“All consular and legal protection will certainly be provided to the Russian female national,” he said.

China allows couples to have a 3rd child in order to fix the country’s aging population problem

China has allowed families to have a third child, as the country faces an increasingly aging population. The longstanding one-child policy was abandoned in 2016.

“Policy that allows a couple to have three children will be introduced with supporting measures,” China’s Communist Party Politburo said in a statement, as cited by the South China Morning Post. “This will improve the population structure of China.”

The move is aimed at tackling the country’s demographic problem.

Xinhua news agency cited the Politburo as saying that the “decision to optimize birth policies will promote a long-term and balanced population development.” The governing body’s meeting on Monday was chaired by China’s leader, Xi Jinping.

China ended its decades-old one-child policy, which was designed to control population growth, in October 2015. Starting from 2016, couples were allowed to have two children.

Size matters in geopolitics, so the West is excited China’s population growth is ending. But here’s how Beijing will solve it

According to the World Health Organization, due to the longer life expectancy and declining birth rates, people over the age of 60 are projected to make up 28% of China’s population by 2040. This dynamic hinders the growth of the economy and poses a challenge to the public health system.

The country has also been plagued with a huge gender imbalance, with the number of men exceeding women by more than 30 million, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics. Peng Xizhe, the director of the Fudan University Center for Population and Development Policy Studies, told the Global Times last year that it will take “about 50 to 60 years” to resolve the imbalance.

Last year’s once-in-a-decade census revealed that China’s population reached 1.41 billion. But the growth rate over the past 10 years was lower than between 2000 and 2010, and the lowest since the 1960s.

Australia and New Zealand unite in ‘concerns’ over Beijing after NZ was accused of seeking ‘fast Chinese buck’

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern and her Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison pledged unity in standing up to various Chinese policies. The show of solidarity came after a media report suggested Wellington was cozying up to China.

Prime Ministers Ardern and Morrison met in Queenstown, New Zealand on Monday. They issued a joint statement expressing concern over Beijing’s “intensification of destabilising activities” in the South China Sea and accused China of taking steps to undermine the autonomy of Hong Kong and restricting human rights and freedoms there.

The leaders also called on China to “respect the human rights of the Uyghur people and other Muslim minorities.”

Beijing strongly denies any crackdowns on human rights within its borders, denouncing the claims as Western propaganda.

Ardern told reporters the two neighboring countries have “broadly been positioned in exactly the same place” on major issues like human rights and trade.

“I really push back on any suggestion that we are not taking a strong stance on these incredibly important issues,” she said.

Morrison spoke in the same manner, describing Australia and New Zealand as “great partners, friends, allies and indeed family.”

Australia joins military drills with France, Japan & US as tensions with China intensify

The public display of unity came right after New Zealand’s China policies were called into question in a much-discussed documentary by Channel 9’s ‘60 Minutes Australia’. In the show’s dramatic trailer, New Zealand’s approach to Beijing was characterized as a “deal with the devil,” splitting with Australia in order to make “a fast Chinese buck.”

The episode was advertised with the tagline: “Could it be that New Zealand is turning into New Xi-land?” referring to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Ardern denounced the portrayal of her country as cozying up to China. “I think what we’re dealing with here is more of a perception issue – particularly, I notice, from the Australian media, than reality,” she told ‘The AM Show’ on Monday.

When asked if he thinks New Zealand is selling out its sovereignty to China, Morrison said no.

“Australia and New Zealand are trading nations, but neither of us would ever trade our sovereignty or our values,” he said.

Relations between Australia and China have deteriorated significantly since Australia called for an investigation into the origins of Covid-19. The diplomatic rows involved tariffs, disputes in the sphere of telecommunications, and politicians exchanging blows on social media.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin has rejected Australia’s and New Zealand’s stance, saying that Beijing strongly opposes foreign interference in its domestic affairs, according to Reuters.

Pro-Israeli US group presents ‘Iron Dome’, a smirking flying superhero who reminds critics of supremacist villains

An Israel-themed superhero character nicknamed ‘Iron Dome’ has attracted mockery on Twitter after being promoted by an American pro-Israeli group. Users were left unconvinced of his virtues.

What better way is there to explain to American children that Israel is the good guy than creating a superhero character wearing the country’s national symbols and naming him after a weapon system? This was probably the rationale of US-based pro-Israel advocacy group Stand With Us when they tweeted out a picture of an athletic flying man dressed in white-and-blue spandex, with a Star of David on his chest, with a smug smirk on his face. They declared him to be a “new Israeli superhero… the protector/defender of Israel. We love it!”

The character was credited to Israeli actress, singer-songwriter, and model Sarai Givaty. She said the artwork was done by Yehuda Devir, an internationally acclaimed artist known for humoristic depictions of his life with wife Maya.

Givaty came up with the idea of Iron Dome to explain to her small children what was happening earlier this month during the flare-up of violence between Israel and Hamas. While in reality the eponymous air defense system was intercepting rockets coming from the Gaza Strip, she told kids that the loud booms were the sound of the superhero smashing the projectiles.

How the British government secretly funded Syrian cartoons and comic books as anti-Assad propaganda aimed at children

But after the character was given a publicity bump by Stand With Us, it was met not with relieved smiles, but with cringing mockery. To many, Iron Dome evoked such characters as Homelander from ‘The Boys’ and Omni-Man from ‘Invincible’. Both have recently made their way from the pages of adult comic books to the silver screen, with adaptations in 2019 and 2021 respectively.

Homelander and Omni-Man are among the most powerful beings in their respective fictional universes, not unlike DC Comics’ Superman. They pose as heroic defenders of humanity, but (Spoiler alert!) they are not what they seem. Homelander is a violent, immature glory hound, fixated on his TV ratings. Omni-Man is the one-person advance force of a tyrannical space empire, softening up Earth’s defenses before an invasion. Both are certain that their off-the-charts superpowers make them superior to everyone else.

Other commentators reminded the advocacy group of its previous attempt to deliver its message through superhero genre tropes. Captain Israel was created by Arlen Schumer and unveiled by Stand With Us in 2011. He is an immortal defender of Israel, protecting it from the great menace of BDS, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction movement.

Apparently modeled after Marvel’s Captain America, that superhero was carrying a shield shaped as the Star of David and what appeared to be a flaming menorah-topped staff as a weapon. The series only lasted for two issues, though, and its website disappeared several years later. It remains unclear whether Iron Dome will be picked up by Stand With Us for a series of his own.

The attempt to defend Israel’s policies by embodying its cause in a superhero figure reminded some of cartoonist Eli Valley and how he savaged the concept in one of his strips. The mock comics ‘Israel Man and Diaspora Boy’ satirize the belief that Jews living in Israel are superior to members of the Jewish diaspora. Valley, who is Jewish, is an outspoken critic of Israel and is considered by some pro-Israeli groups to be a bigoted anti-Semite.

While not as popular as in the US, superhero comics have been incorporated into Israel’s popular and political culture. For instance, Israeli comic artist and writer Uri Fink started his career in the 1970s with a book about superhero Sabraman, who fights against Nazi supervillains such as Dr. Mengele with his radioactive superpowers.

Decades later, Fink and writer Eli Eshed co-authored a mocu-history book about a supposedly widely popular strip featuring superhero Golem and how it reflected and impacted life in Israel over its history.

India extends $41 BILLION loan guarantee scheme to airlines & small businesses amid pandemic

India’s Finance Ministry has announced the expansion of an emergency credit program to cover airlines and hospitals, to protect them from the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.

According to the ministry, the loans, which were previously intended for specific sectors such as small borrowers, can be claimed until September 30 or until total guarantees worth three trillion rupees ($41 billion) are offered. Sunil Mehta, chief executive of the Indian Banks’ Association, said at a briefing that around 2.5 trillion rupees ($34 billion) have so far been disbursed.

“With the second wave and incremental stress on debt servicing of the borrowers, relief measures under the loan guarantee scheme will support liquidity position of the borrowers,” Anil Gupta, the vice president for financial sector ratings at ICRA, was quoted as saying by Bloomberg. “The government will not be burdened with additional cost because of the second wave and this will also improve the utilization of overall funding pool available under the plan.”

People familiar with the matter said that the overall size of the government guarantee program could be expanded, and could include Covid-affected individuals and medical sectors. It will thus guarantee loans worth 20 million rupees ($275,000) to hospitals and clinics to set up on-site oxygen generation plants. Interest rates will be capped at 7.5%.

India to avoid recession with economy forecast to grow despite Covid crisis

Small companies will be able to borrow an additional 30% of their credit limit, up from the 20% announced last year, the sources said.

“These are more proactive steps that are being taken to offer mitigation to the hardship that the sector might experience,” said Dinesh Khara, chairman of the State Bank of India. He added that it is too early for any bank to say with “definitive certainty” what impact the second wave of the pandemic has had on small and medium businesses.

India has recorded 27.9 million Covid-19 infections, behind only the United States, and over 325,000 deaths as of Sunday. The nation has been hit with a harsh second wave of coronavirus infections, but the rise in cases has finally begun to slow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration says the economic impact will not be as severe as last year, because lockdowns are looser this time and growth in manufacturing and exports is higher.

RT reports from the thick of war in Central African Republic as Russian instructors aim to help local troops bring lasting peace

After a decade of fighting warlords and lawlessness, the Central African Republic is building up a capable military to achieve long-desired peace – and Russian instructors, exclusively interviewed by RT, are key to that mission.

A bloody civil war has been raging in the Central African Republic (CAR) since 2012. The country, which gained independence from France in 1960, has had a tumultuous history of various factions seeking to usurp power, and the violence in the resource-rich nation has dragged on well into the 21st century. When the CAR’s president, Faustin-Archange Touadera, requested Moscow’s assistance in 2018, his government had control over just a small part of the country’s territory, while the rest was claimed by warlords and their gangs.

With the approval of the UN Security Council, Moscow began sending light weapons and instructors to train the army. The outside backing was a game changer, as the authorities in Bangui now say that 90% of the country answers to them.

RT’s Konstantin Rozhkov traveled to the CAR to take an exclusive look at the work done by the Russian instructors and the dangers they face every day on their mission. He met with Aleksandr Ivanov, the spokesman for the official Russian contingent, who told Rozhkov that their task was a tough one from the start. At the time when the Russians arrived, some of the local troops “couldn’t disassemble an assault rifle and had no idea how to aim,” Ivanov said.

Guardian cries ‘Russians are coming’ amid new scramble for Africa

The CAR, which boasts vast deposits of diamonds and gold, is still a long way from being a peaceful place.

“Today the armed forces of the Central African Republic, along with their allies, the Russian Federation and Rwanda, are engaged in a counter-offensive to put an end to this campaign of destabilization,” President Touadera told RT.

The militants have not been crushed entirely, but have retreated into the jungle and switched to guerrilla tactics. Armed with automatic weapons and rocket launchers, they attack remote villages, military checkpoints, and civilian convoys. The daily duty of the 500 Russian specialists in the CAR includes helping the forces secure the ‘Route of Life’. “Most of the food and essentials are being supplied to the country” through this road, leading to the border with Cameroon, one of the instructors, who asked not to be named for security reasons, told Rozhkov.

RT’s crew joined the Russian instructors on a mission to escort a convoy along this key artery. The loaded trucks were organized at an outpost on the Cameroon border and then driven further inland under armed protection. The mandate of the instructors only allows for them to open fire in self-defense, Ivanov said. Attacks on the convoys happen quite frequently, with burned vehicles frequently spotted on the roadside, and a crack in the window of a bulletproof SUV that the crew was traveling in, serving as a daily reminder. An instructor recalls: “We were fired upon from the bushes with an assault rifle and a grenade launcher. But they missed.”

After visiting the base and interviewing some of the soldiers working with the Russians, RT’s crew set off for a gold mine deep in the jungle, and to film in villages recently recaptured from the militants, which could only be reached by helicopter. During the flight, the pilots kept a supply of hand grenades at the ready to scare off the militants in case they start firing at the aircraft.

The poverty and devastation filmed in the remote CAR settlements have an even more horrifying backstory – the militants who controlled this area have forced the villagers to work in the gold mine as slaves, killing those who refused to work or were too exhausted to carry on. People still hide when they see an armed unit approaching, before realizing they are government troops.

Getting to the gold mine itself remains a dangerous ordeal as the militants sometimes reemerge from the jungle and plant landmines on the road, hoping to loot any vehicle that sets off an IED. RT’s crew encountered one such surprise from the militants, but the mine was spotted in time and detonated in a controlled blast.

The locals say that they see the Russian specialists as their protectors, with one villager explaining they have never offended or harassed anybody. When asked about his mission, one of the Russian instructors told Rozhkov that he was helping “the good” prevail, “assisting a nation in a difficult situation when people need protection.”

“The only problem we have with the Russians is that they haven’t showed up in these parts for a long time,” a villager said. However, the Russian contingent is simply not large enough to secure the whole of the CAR – this is the job of the troops they’re helping to become battle-ready.

Canada’s largest pension funds stick to lucrative oil sands bets

Canada’s oil sands industry is too carbon-intensive for the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets of some of the world’s largest institutional investors. But not for Canada’s own pension funds.

The five largest Canadian pension funds, which manage $1.2 trillion in total assets, saw their combined investment in the US-listed shares of the major oil sands producer surge by 147% in the first quarter of 2021, to a total of $2.4 billion, according to a Reuters analysis of filings to the SEC.

Most of the jump in the value of investments of the pension funds merely reflected the rise in share prices of stock already held. Yet, the funds also bought more shares in the largest Canadian oil sands producers, according to the Reuters analysis.

Canada is battling another pipeline cancellation by US

Regardless of the way in which the pension funds boosted investment in oil sands in the first quarter, the fact remains that unlike other pension funds and some of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, Canada’s pension funds have not pledged or made divestments in one of the most emissions-heavy way of producing oil.

The funds, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), British Columbia Investment Management Corp (BCI), and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP) collectively increased the value of their investments in Canadian Natural Resources, Suncor Energy, Cenovus Energy, and Imperial Oil, according to the Reuters analysis.

Some of Canada’s pension funds have committed to carbon-neutral portfolios by 2050. Commenting on the analysis for Reuters, a PSP Investments spokeswoman said many of the fund’s investments were in passive portfolios tracking stock indexes. Representatives of other funds told Reuters that their exposure to fossil fuels as a whole is a tiny percentage of total assets held.

Canada's oil heartland wants to make US pay for scrapped Keystone XL pipeline

Nevertheless, the funds have been criticized by activists for not doing enough to account for climate risk in their portfolios by divesting from the oil sands business.

Commenting on this week’s high-profile case in which a Dutch court ordered Shell to slash emissions, holding it directly responsible for contributing to climate change, pension activist group Shift said: “Pension funds take note: This case highlights the growing climate-related legal risks faced by oil and gas companies amidst a wave of litigation against the fossil fuel producers most responsible for the climate crisis.”

“We have a big problem with pension funds saying we believe in engagement, not divestment, but there’s no sign of this engagement,” Shift’s director Adam Scott told Reuters.

Other institutional investors and pension funds have already dumped their stakes in oil sands companies.

In May last year, Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, the world’s largest sovereign fund which has amassed its enormous wealth from Norway’s oil, decided to exclude Canadian Natural Resources, Cenovus Energy, Suncor Energy, and Imperial Oil over “unacceptable greenhouse gas emissions.” Even the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the sovereign wealth fund of the world’s largest oil exporter Saudi Arabia, has recently sold all the 51 million shares it held in Suncor.

Among pension funds, the New York State Common Retirement Fund said last month it would divest its US$7-million investment in Canadian oil sands firms after determining that seven companies “failed to show they are transitioning out of oil sands production.”

Canada oil industry loses over 20% of workforce since 2014

The evaluation of the fund’s oil sands holdings are part of a broader review of climate risk in energy investments, and the fund will next evaluate shale oil and gas companies, it said.

The Bank of Canada also warned in its latest Financial System Review (FSR) from earlier this month that climate-related vulnerabilities are first among “ongoing issues that we all need to take seriously now to protect our financial system and economy in the future.”

“The potential impact of climate risks is generally underappreciated, and they are not well priced. That means the transition to a low-carbon economy could leave some investors and financial institutions exposed to large losses in the future,” Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said.

Travel restrictions & partial lockdown imposed in Guangzhou, China against cluster of Indian Covid variant

Border control and a partial lockdown have been imposed in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, after a cluster of the Indian variant of the coronavirus was discovered there.

People leaving Guangzhou, a provincial capital of 15.3 million, must test negative for the coronavirus within 72 hours before the trip.

Roughly 520 flights were canceled at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, one of the world’s busiest air travel hubs, as of 11:40am local time on Monday, CNA news agency reported, citing aviation data provider VariFlight.

Authorities earlier announced stay-at-home orders for residents of several streets in the city’s Liwan District, where the first infected patient was discovered on May 21, and restricted travel on the subway and buses. Large gatherings were banned across Guangzhou, while indoor venues were told to operate at limited capacity and targeted mass-testing programs were launched.

Chen Bin, the deputy chief of the provincial health commission, was cited by Xinhua as confirming on Sunday that all locally transmitted cases found in Guangzhou since May 21 were linked to the B.1.617 coronavirus strain, also known as the Indian variant.

Tests, masks & no cheering? Japan mulls restrictions for local fans after foreigners already banned from Tokyo Olympics

Japanese authorities are considering which restrictions will be needed to hold the Tokyo Olympics safely, including mandatory proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 test, and potential ban on eating and drinking at the venues.

With the Tokyo Olympics set to kick off in less than two months on July 23, Japanese authorities have come up with a draft of measures to prevent the games from turning into a superspreader event, the Yomiuri newspaper reported, citing government officials.

All fans will be required to show a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid-19 test result taken within a week of attending an event. By the end of June authorities are set to determine the maximum capacity at each facility, where additional security guards will be deployed to check for violations, and ensure an orderly entry and exit of the crowds.

Wearing masks will be mandatory at all times inside the venue, so that authorities are even mulling a ban on eating and drinking at the stands. Chaotic and loud cheering, hugging and high-fiving may also be banned, according to the paper.

New poll finds over 80% of disgruntled Japanese population oppose Tokyo Olympics this summer

The limitations, if adopted, will only apply to Japanese fans, however, since all foreign visitors had already been banned from attending the games back in March.

Japanese authorities and Olympic Committee officials have repeatedly dismissed fears about the games, stating they are not considering canceling or postponing the event, but only focused on how to hold the games “safely.”

WATCH: Homeless man attacks & knocks down female police officer in San Francisco Chinatown, as bystanders rush to help

A homeless man, suspected of vandalizing property and shouting racist slurs in San Francisco Chinatown, has been captured on video attacking an Asian police officer as she approached to detain him.

The incident happened near Portsmouth Square on Friday night, but videos of the scuffle shared online on Sunday show how the incident unfolded, as a female officer attempted to detain a heavily-built male suspect without any backup.

At first the man seems to be cooperating, but as the officer approaches, pulling on her gloves, he suddenly turns around and grabs her. After struggling for several seconds, he easily pins her down to the ground.

Multiple bystanders rushed to help the officer, and it took as many as four people to subdue the suspect, before the backup arrived roughly a minute later.

The officer was injured and transported to the local hospital, but her wounds were non-life threatening, according to local media reports.

The suspect has not been identified, but according to witnesses, he was a homeless man who had been vandalizing rental scooters and yelling racial slurs at Asian passers-by earlier in the day. After receiving a warning from police he refused to leave the area, and attacked the officer when approached again several hours later.
